It’s a fair question — and an important one. Safari pricing can feel somewhat overwhelming. There are so many price points, and then the added complexity, like peak-season pricing and single supplements for solo travellers. Certain reserves are more premium than others,

We have written this guide for first-time safari travellers who want clarity and not confusion or internet noise. Here we explain what actually drives the safari cost in South Africa, what different budgets really buy you, and how to avoid paying for the wrong experience.

What most people don’t realise is this. A lot of lodge owners have deep pockets and can spend on social media. So do not be fooled. The lodges and game reserves you see online are not always the best. What is perceived as expensive is not always the best value.

A high-quality safari in South Africa typically costs between $550 and $900 per person, per night, with ultra-luxury lodges in private reserves reaching $1,100–$1,500+ in peak season.

What you pay depends far more on location, guiding quality, and inclusions than star ratings alone. Private reserves bordering Kruger National Park cost more than public parks, but offer fewer vehicles, off-road sightings, and significantly better wildlife experiences.

For most first-time luxury travellers, 4–5 nights in a well-located private reserve offers the best balance of value, comfort, and wildlife depth. Paying more doesn’t automatically mean a better safari — choosing the right fit does.

What Does A South Africa Safari Actually Cost?

There’s no single number — and anyone offering one is oversimplifying. Safari pricing is shaped by where you go, how you travel, and what’s included.

That said, for orientation, here’s a realistic per-person, per-night (sharing) guide for professionally guided safaris:

This normally includes accommodation, all meals, local beverages and 2 daily game drives.

This excludes international and domestic flights, spa treatments, curio shopping and gratuities

For a solo traveller, it is more expensive. You can add +50% to these prices.

Large Safari Lodges

These are the resorts of the savanna. Expect 60 or more suites.  Every effort is made to personalise the experience; the resorts are a well-oiled machine, catering to serving many guests at once. 3 or 4 public pools, and an amazing bar and spa experience. Nothing wrong with the safari experience. Just not as exclusive as a luxury safari lodge.

Self-Catering Chalets

Best suited to self-drivers. Lower nightly costs, but you trade convenience, guiding quality, and seamless experience.

Marula Hill Travel insight- although we have access to all the safari lodges with different price points, if you can save up and go for a top-tier luxury lodge and tented camp, do so. It is a long flight and expensive to get to South Africa. Save for a few years and do it nicely. By this, we mean luxury safari lodges and tented camps for the best possible safari experience of a life.

Does The Safari Length Affect The Overall Price

Yes it does. A minimum of 3 nights is what we would suggest. Or do a combination at 2 lodges for 3 nights each. Our sweet spot is at least 5 nights at a lodge. We believe this is the perfect amount of time to experience the full safari. For odd-numbered nights, lodges offer a pay-stay, ie pay for 3 and stay for 4 nights, or pay for 5 nights and stay for 6.

Yes — especially for first-timers. South Africa offers exceptional infrastructure, guiding depth, and price flexibility.

Is the low season worth it?

Without a doubt, yes. You will still see all the game, and the lodge’s luxury experience does not change

Can solo travellers expect higher costs?

Sadly yes. A solo traveller can expect to pay +50% more. But some lodges offer the single supplement at certain times of the year.

Do I need internal flights?

Not always. So reserve like Welgevonden, Madikwe, and Pilanesberg, a close drive from Johannesburg.
