South Africa is a country filled with adventure, culture, and diverse, breathtaking landscapes. As professional travel agents, we get many questions from parents planning a South Africa Holiday for their kids. The real question is this: Is South Africa good for families?
The answer is without a doubt, yes — exceptionally so, if it is planned with care.
We have written this guide for families considering their first trip to South Africa. South Africa is one of the few destinations that has it all: cities, great restaurants, beaches, mountains and world-class safari game reserves. So holidays can be combined with experiences like a beach-and-safari holiday, all contained within one country.
We’re Sian Loehrer and Vikki Jackson, co-owners of Marula Hill Travel. Between us, we have lived here and have travelled through South Africa’s national parks, private reserves, cities, and coastlines — designing tailor-made journeys for families who want their children to learn, explore, and genuinely enjoy Africa.
But this is an important point to understand:
“South Africa is one of the most family-friendly countries in Africa. But you need to know where to go, and where not to go. You also need to pace the trip, as doing too much, can feel rushed. I would always suggest getting a professional to help you plan this trip.” Sian Loehrer co-owner of Marula Hill Travel
TL,DR- Is South Africa Good For Families?
Yes. South Africa is one of the best destinations in Africa for family travel, especially for families with children aged six and up.
It offers excellent infrastructure, malaria-free safari options, short travel distances, and a wide choice of child-friendly lodges. When planned properly, families can combine safari with beaches, cities, and downtime — making the experience exciting, educational, and surprisingly easy.

Which Places In South Africa Are Great For Family Holidays?
The Cape Winelands- Is it family-friendly?
Yes, actually, surprisingly so!!
The Cape Winelands offer more than just vineyards and wine. This is where the mountains meet the valley; it is not just magnificent scenery, but so much to do. Enjoy hiking, E-Bike rides, wine tasting, small-animal farms for petting, picnics, cultural tours, and so much more.

Cape Town- Is This A good Destination For A Family Holiday?
Yes, Cape Town is a must-visit for families.
It really is a beautiful city, with Table Mountain as the backdrop. A wonderful and memorable experience for the whole family is a ride up Table Mountain in the cable car. Enjoy the beaches like Camps Bay and Muizenberg Beach. At the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, enjoy the aquarium, shops, restaurants, boat trips and helicopter rides. Then there are the penguins at Boulders Beach. They live among the residents and make a lovely visit for the whole family.

Is The Garden Route Good For Family Travel?
Yes, especially if you have the time to travel.
This is more for the adventurous family. Stretching for hundreds of kilometres of coastal road, there is much to do. Enjoy the forest walk and ziplining in the Tsitsikamma forest. Or for the more brave, Bungee Jumping at Storms River Bridge. And there are a number of wildlife sanctuaries for animal conservation and rehabilitation.
Is The Kruger National Park Suitable For Families?
Without a doubt, yes.
The Kruger ( as it is known) is still one of the best places for a family holiday.
- The highlight will be that you and your family will see the Big Five- lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo and elephant.
- Easy to get to a 45-minute plane trip, so you are not driving or flying for days.
- Stay at a luxury lodge and enjoy game drives or do your own self-drives.

What Else Can Families Do Which Is Not Cape Town Or a Safari?
As a travel agent, I can tell you that Safari, Cape Town, the Winelands and the Garden Route are the most popular family holiday experiences. There are family experiences like Johannesburg’s Goldreef City, The Cango Caves in Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape and of course the dramatic Drakensberg Mountains. These are more off the beaten track, but are great family-friendly experiences.
Common Mistakes Families Make When Travelling to South Africa?
- Trying to cram too much in. More of the holiday is then taken up with travel and rushing to destinations than enjoying the destinations themselves.
- Choosing safari lodges which claim to be family-friendly, but there are limited activities for kids.
- Prioritising price over comfort and flexibility. You really do get what you pay for. Sometimes, cheap is not always good
Top Tip- if safari is the priority, try and stay in a top luxury lodge. If you do not have the money, save. Top safari lodges cater exceptionally well for a well-rounded and conservation-minded children’s activities.
