Is South Africa good for families? An Honest Guide for Parents Planning a Trip

South Africa is a fantastic family destination, offering various experiences that blend adventure, education, and relaxation. From its breathtaking landscapes to its warm and welcoming locals, South Africa provides a safe and enriching environment for families to explore and create unforgettable memories.

South Africa is a country filled with adventure, culture, and diverse, breathtaking landscapes. As professional travel agents, we get many questions from parents planning a South Africa Holiday for their kids. The real question is this: Is South Africa good for families?

The answer is without a doubt, yes — exceptionally so, if it is planned with care.

We have written this guide for families considering their first trip to South Africa. South Africa is one of the few destinations that has it all: cities, great restaurants, beaches, mountains and world-class safari game reserves. So holidays can be combined with experiences like a beach-and-safari holiday, all contained within one country.

We’re Sian Loehrer and Vikki Jackson, co-owners of Marula Hill Travel. Between us, we have lived here and have travelled through South Africa’s national parks, private reserves, cities, and coastlines — designing tailor-made journeys for families who want their children to learn, explore, and genuinely enjoy Africa.

But this is an important point to understand:

“South Africa is one of the most family-friendly countries in Africa. But you need to know where to go, and where not to go. You also need to pace the trip, as doing too much, can feel rushed.  I would always suggest getting a professional to help you plan this trip.” Sian Loehrer co-owner of Marula Hill Travel

As a travel agent, I can tell you that Safari, Cape Town, the Winelands and the Garden Route are the most popular family holiday experiences.  There are family experiences like Johannesburg’s Goldreef City, The Cango Caves in  Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape and of course the dramatic Drakensberg Mountains. These are more off the beaten track, but are great family-friendly experiences.

Common Mistakes Families Make When Travelling to South Africa?

  • Trying to cram too much in. More of the holiday is then taken up with travel and rushing to destinations than enjoying the destinations themselves.
  • Choosing safari lodges which claim to be family-friendly, but there are limited activities for kids.
  • Prioritising price over comfort and flexibility. You really do get what you pay for. Sometimes, cheap is not always good

Top Tip- if safari is the priority, try and stay in a top luxury lodge. If you do not have the money, save. Top safari lodges cater exceptionally well for a well-rounded and conservation-minded children’s activities.
